Why Do I Need To Be Fitted For A Breast Prosthesis And Mastectomy Bras?

After a mastectomy, the proper selection and fitting of a breast prosthesis is an important step on your way to regaining a full and active lifestyle. The loss of a breast can affect your balance if you are not properly fit with a weighted silicone breast form. As a result, you may develop neck, back and posture problems. A properly fit breast form will restore your natural look and balance--helping you to look and feel better.

Just as important as the proper size and style prosthesis, is the bra that carries it. The bra should give you comfort, security and good support - keeping the breast form close to the chest wall to minimize the weight placed on your neck and shoulders

How Often Will I Need To Be Fitted?

Whenever you notice a change in your body, you should have your fitting updated. If you lose or gain weight, you may need to change the size or shape breast form you are wearing. Often times after a mastectomy, even with no weight gain, your remaining breast becomes larger because the body's hormones are now directed toward one breast rather than two. You may also develop changes in the chest wall as a result of your body's response to the surgery or treatments you may have undergone. For these reasons, it is advised that you have a fitting consultation once a year even if your current breast form is in good condition.

Will My Insurance Cover Breast Prostheses And Mastectomy Bras?

With a prescription from your doctor, Medicare and many private insurance companies will cover a percentage of the cost of a new prosthesis and mastectomy bras. Some insurances will cover these products as often as once every year.
